Advantages of central vacuum systems

A central vacuum system is cleaning equipment installed in a building to optimize hygiene and tidiness. With its canister located in the basement or garage, it receives debris or dust drawn by the power of the central power unit from wall outlets, strategically located for the homeowner’s convenience.

Advantages of central vacuum systems over portable units

·         Durability- they're long-lasting! Their engines can handle greater use than traditional portable systems. Warranties are typically longer for central units, too.

·         Silence- Because the engine is outside the living room, users are not exposed to unnecessary and stressful engine noise.

·         They are anti-allergy- In contrast to portable vacuums which recycle air in the room, dust-loaded air from central vacuum systems is blown in the outside. Exhaustive research at Davis' School of Medicine at the University of California compared the portable with central units and found that "allergen removal would be the better central vacuuming device since it is built outside the living room of the household and/or outside the ventilation."

·         The system is easy to use and secure- There is no bulky equipment to transport, no electrical wires to move or catch on furniture.

Types of central vacuum cleaners available:

·         Cyclonic- air spreading in a canister to the outside. Location is necessary for those units because exhausted, debris-laden air is possible to find its way back into the house through open windows. The filter must be regularly removed and cleaned;

·         Inverted filter- in the center of a hurricane air whirl, in which debris joins in the vacuum canister. The canister should be emptied often outside the building. Allergy patients can find disposal painful when mold and other waste are carried by air;

·         Disposable bag- in which waste in the same manner as in portable units is sucked into a paper bag. This may be the cleanest and hygienic way, as mold spores, bacteria, and other debris are isolated and contained physically in the bag where they are unlikely to emerge from.

The disadvantages of central vacuum systems include:

·       Initial Installation Price- A reliable central vacuum system will average at $1,500, which is considerably more expensive than even the conventional premium portable vacuum cleaners;

·         Weak suction- Such a problem may be due to obstructed exhaust, pipes, or even an extremely dirty filter, or a full canister that needs to be emptied. If the unit does not operate at all, the motor might be broken, a breaker may have tripped, or the wiring may be defective.
